FILM: JCVD

Looks like Jean Claude Van Dam has a new movie coming out, and it’s not one of the high-flying karate filled action thriller films that made him famous. JCVD, directed by Mabrouk El Mechri is sort of a docu/mockumentary film starring Jean Claude as . . . himself, playing a fallen action hero caught in the middle of a hold-up at a bank in Brussels, Belgium. Can the action star live up to the legend he’s built? The short answer to that is no, but in the end this movie looks like the one that can help recharge his career by casting him as a somewhat eccentric actor dealing with his age (he’s 47) and having to fess up to the image he’s built. It’s a perspective yet to really be explored in action movies or by an action star, making this one film to see.

JCVD is released through Peace Arch and brought to the screen by Gaumont, Samsa Film, Artemis Productions, and RTBF. It hits theatres in a limited release on November 7th. Catch it in NYC at AMC’s Empire 25 & Angelika Film Center.
