Friday June 12

Location: Union Square, NYC
Event: The Air Sex World Championships Get Tickets Here
Show time: 9 PM
Venue: Highline Ballroom
Food: Chat N’ Chew
Drink: Beauty Bar
Miscellaneous: Max Brenner: Chocolate by the Bald Man

Not quite Air Guitar and not quite a public sex act, The Air Sex World Championships will see performers simulate their best and worst moves onstage to music and in whatever sort of wardrobe each contestant feels will wow the crowd and the judges who include Justine Joli (Penthouse Pet 2008), Heather Holliday (Sword Swallower with The Coney Island Circus Sideshow) and Victoria ‘Dr. Z’ Zdrok (2004 Penthouse Pet and Penthouse columnist). A good drink spot that will be just as interesting is Beauty Bar. This former beauty parlor is one of the most happening bars in the city. Where else can you get a manicure with your drink (seriously, drink/manicure specials on weekends $10). Chat N’ Chew is a down-home comfort food spot with plenty of faves like meatloaf, Mexican, and milkshakes. If you’d prefer to just escape the cold, head over to Max Brenner: Chocolate by the Bald Man and cool off with a variety of hot and cold chocolate drinks that will blow your mind.

Friday June 12

Location: Lower East Side, NYC
Bands: School of Seven Bells + Violens + Apache Beat Get Tickets Here
Show time: 9 PM
Venue: Bowery Ballroom
Food: Social
Drink: 151
Miscellaneous: Bereket

This is a pretty awesome show mainly because all three of these bands are really great. School of Seven Bells offers up some fantastic indie electro rock while Violens bring some very retro new wave heat and the female led Apache Beat make some great synth heavy rock. Where to go afterwards? Go straight to the bar, and that bar would be 151, where happy hour is 7 days a week from 6pm till 10pm and includes 2 for 1 drinks. For those that don’t want a liquid dinner first, check Social for comfort food including the Mac and Cheese (Macaroni covered in Three Cheese Truffled Mornay Sauce and topped w/Seasoned Bread Crumbs). For a late night eat, a favorite spot of mine is Bereket for falafels and to watch drunks succeed at spilling their food all over themselves and failing at picking up chicks. Not for the faint of heart!

Saturday June 13

Location: Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Bands: Northside Festival: Ernest Jenning Records Showcase
Show time: 2 PM
Venue: Union Pool
Food: Chimu
Drink: Union Pool
Miscellaneous: Eks

One of the best indie rock labels out there today, Ernest Jenning records, brings out the heavy guns for the Northside Festival with The Albertans, La Strada, Charles Burnt, and Skeletonbreath who are all downright amazing bands. With so much good food in Williamsburg, you should not forget about Chimu. A Peruvian steakhouse right next to Union Pool, the rotisserie chicken and every other dish I’ve had here is amazing, and it won’t break the bank! For drinks, Union Pool is still one of the best bars in town. If you’re single, it’s a goldmine for ass, the drinks aren’t pricey, and the DJs play an eclectic mix of ridiculously good music. Not exactly Pinkberry, yet just as expensive, Eks is Williamsburg’s answer to the yogurt fad currently popping up.

Saturday June 13

Location: Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Bands: Asobi Seksu Get Tickets Here
Show time: 9:30 PM
Venue: Music Hall of Williamsburg
Food: Dumont Burger
Drink: Radegast Hall & Biergarten
Miscellaneous: Verb Cafe

Indie-pop act Asobi Seksu writes some gorgeous songs. Take their latest album Hush which is a dreamy goldmine of pop songs like “Layers” which has already been on an episode of Ugly Betty. With one of the best burgers in Williamsburg, Dumont Burger offers theirs with gourmet toppings, sandwiches, salads, and their amazing mac & cheese. So you consider yourself a beer connoisseur and like to party. You can do all that and eat at Radegast Hall & Biergarten. The Austrian/German menu perfectly compliments the 12 beers on tap and more than 30 German and Austrian bottles at this large beer hall. One of the oldest and best hipster hangout coffee shops, The Verb Cafe offers up excellent coffee and baked goods, a boho vibe, and big windows to watch the days pass while collecting unemployment!

Sunday June 14

Location: West Village, NYC
Bands: Major Lazer
Show time: 9 PM
Venue: S.O.B.’s
Food: Ear Inn
Drink: Village Lantern
Miscellaneous: Jacques Torres

The collaboration of DJs Diplo and Switch with the fictional Major Lazer, a Jamaican commando who lost his arms in the secret zombie war of 1984 may sound ridiculous but the album has a pretty badass mix of reggae, hip hop and electronics with plenty of zombies. One of my favorite places for food, Ear Inn is a 200-year-old bar with a small menu featuring burgers, sandwiches, and a chalkboard with specials including Jerk Chicken that’s under $10. With $3 pints Monday thru Friday 12pm to 7pm along with comedy and music performances, the Village Lantern is a great bar to chill at after work, especially now that it’s finally getting warm outside. Watch some of the best chocolate in the world made right in front of your eyes at Jacques Torres or browse through the store and sample for yourself the fruits of this master chocolatier’s labor.
