Friday June 18

Location: Union Square, NYC
Band: Melvins Get Tickets Here
Show time: 6 PM
Venue: Webster Hall
Food: Momofuku
Drink: The Village Pourhouse
Miscellaneous: Sundaes and Cones

Legendary grunge outfit the Melvins return with their 20th studio album The Bride Screamed Murder seeing them continue putting out great rock. They are one of the godfathers of grunge and kick ass live. Joining them are Isis and Totimoshi. If you like ramen noodles and pork, then Momofuku is your spot for food. The Berkshire pork is the best I’ve had and it’s the only place I’ll eat pork period, which should tell you just how good Momofuku really is! The Village Pourhouse may look like a neighborhood bar to watch sports but actually has three more rooms, where you can order food or find a quiet place to smooch! For dessert a little left of the dial, Sundaes and Cones offers eclectic flavors like wasabi and corn and many more flavors that are familiar.

Friday June 18

Location: SoHo, NYC
Band: My Cousin the Emperor Get Tickets Here
Show time: 8 PM
Venue: WNYC The Greene Space
Food: Nha Trang
Drink: Naked Lunch
Miscellaneous: La Esquina

They beat out 10 other bands to win the title of Best Band from Brooklyn in WNYC’s “Ultimate Battle of the Boroughs,” and with the release of their album A Long Way From Home, My Cousin the Emperor make sweet Americana music heavy on the bluegrass and indie rock. One of the best affordable Vietnamese restaurants in the city, Nha Trang is right near the downtown courthouse, making it a high volume place. Despite that, the food is great and the Pho (rice noodle soup) dishes are $5 and under. Named after William S. Burroughs novel, Naked Lunch is a cool and comfortable bar where local artists usually gather. No shooting up though! One of the best taqueria’s in the city, the Mexican food at La Esquina is authentic and to die for. While tacos will set you back $3, plates are in the $6 to $7.25 range.

Saturday June 19

Location: Coney Island, Brooklyn
Event: Mermaid Parade
Show time: 2 PM
Venue: Coney Island
Food: Nathan’s Famous
Drink: Ruby’s Old Tyme Bar and Grill
Miscellaneous: Brooklyn Cyclones

While the facelift of Coney Island is finally on its way with the recently built Luna Park, the 2010 Mermaid Parade will see the legendary music couple Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson as its king and queen. Expect to see plenty of mermen and mermaids! While you may not be Kobayashi, eating a hot dog, a corn dog, or even cheese fries at Nathan’s Famous goes back several generations. Expect long lines, but it’ll be worth it! Not just a tradition but an institution on the boardwalk, Ruby’s Old Tyme Bar and Grill is a great dive bar for cheap drinks and watching local drunks belt out Rat Pack songs. Even if this minor league Mets team isn’t playing a baseball game, The Brooklyn Cyclones stadium is worth the short walk over on the boardwalk to check out it’s size and beauty.

Saturday June 19

Location: Lower East Side, NYC
Band: Frog Eyes Get Tickets Here
Show time: 8 PM
Venue: Mercury Lounge
Food: Three of Cups
Drink: Whiskey Ward
Miscellaneous: Sugar Sweet Sunshine

Indie music with prog tendencies is what Frog Eyes make, giving bands like Wolf Parade and Animal Collective a run for their money. Joining them are the great Beach Fossils and Pearly Gate Music. What I like about Three of Cups the most is that the food is classic Italian fare like Pizza made in a wood-fired oven, risotto, pasta, while also offering more exciting dishes like lamb stew in a barolo wine reduction, served with potato gnocchi. The atmosphere is relaxing, bordering on romantic. With a name like Whiskey Ward, it’s expected that they deliver the goods, which lucky for this bar, they do. Whether it’s Scotch, Bourbon, Whiskey, or Single Malts, they got em’ along with a pool table and a damn good jukebox. Who doesn’t like cupcakes? Sugar Sweet Sunshine has one of the best in the city. With 10 different kinds, it’s hard to beat.

Sunday June 20

Location: East Village, NYC
Theater: Thank You For Being A Friend: The Musical
Show time: 8 PM
Venue: Kraine Theater
Food: Supper
Drink: 2A
Miscellaneous: Whole Foods on Bowery

When gay pop star Lance Bass moves next to Miami’s favorite retirees, Dorothea, Blanche, Rose, and Sophia, all hell breaks loose as well as plenty of hilarity, wise cracks and tons of Broadway tunes in this unauthorized parody of The Golden Girls musical in drag. Those looking for good and inexpensive Italian food should most definitely check out Supper. Do yourself a favor and try the “Priest Stranglers” pasta with Marinara and soft Ricotta di Pecora cheese. A good nearby bar is 2A. With two floors of windows, it’s great for watching the remaining hipsters who can still afford to live in the city pass by. If all your dinner/drink plans fail and you need an all-in-one, the Whole Foods on Bowery (at Houston Street) is your upscale go-to-grocery store for dinner and snacks.
