It’s been six years since the last full length studio album by Danzig, Circle of Snakes. So if you’re like me, you’ve also been very curious to see what the evil anti-Elvis, Glenn Danzig has up his spooky sleeves these days. The result is their ninth studio offering, Deth Red Sabaoth. This was a release I was looking forward to enjoying, especially with Tommy Victor (Prong) and Johnny Kelly (Type O Negative) on board as well as Danzig’s promise of a more old school approach to the recording process.

After several spins I have to face the fact that it’s a disappointment. In all honesty, just the fact that Glenn is still putting out new music and performing at his age is very cool. This is a man who has amassed quite a career for himself so it’s not like he needs the money. This collection of tunes just felt kind of boring after the first minute or so, which isn’t a good thing when each song averages four minutes or more. It has it’s vintage Danzig moments and it’s amazing how much Glenn’s voice hasn’t changed over the years, but is a bit of a letdown after so many years between releases.

Then again, this album was release during the summer. It will probably sound a lot better when October rolls around. If you’re a die-hard fan, Danzig can do no wrong but if you’re not, you might want to listen to something…happier, instead.
