On Friday night, Interpol played a secret show (announced only one day in advance) to an 18+ sold out crowd. After a bit of confusion at the box office (all tickets were will call only) the first batch of fans hurried inside, mostly bypassing the bar.
Interpol hit the stage around 10:15pm, sharply dressed as always, and the hometown show vibe was out in full force. Both the band and the crowd were clearly having a great time. To the crowd’s obvious delight, Interpol performed a good amount of both old and new tracks including “Barricade,” “Summer Well,” “Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down,” “Say Hello to the Angels,” “Rest My Chemistry,” and “Take You on a Cruise.” Their live sound was as tight as ever. Fans sang and danced along enthusiastically from the very first to the very last notes. And all hands were in the air during “Slow Hands.â€
Live, Interpol truly delivers, flawlessly recreating the atmospheric and sensual sound and feel that they are so well known and loved for. The intensity of their aesthetic was amplified by the venue’s intimate setting (with a capacity of only 550).
Shortly after saying goodnight for the first time, they returned to the stage for a three song encore of “Slow Hands,” the very appropriate “NYC,” and “PDA.” Saying goodnight for the final time, the band left the stage smiling, waving, and blowing kisses, bringing a truly incredible night to a close.
The band will return to New York City in November for a show at United Palace Theater.
