Friday October 15

Location: Union Square, NYC
Band: Dead Kennedys Get Tickets Here
Show time: 7 PM
Venue: The Fillmore at Irving Plaza
Food: Matsuri
Drink: Hiro
Miscellaneous: Cha An Japanese Tea House

Start off the evening at Matsuri*, with Chef Tadashi Ono’s highly acclaimed Japanese food (*make a reservations). At Matsuri the fish is so fresh it’s flown in from Japan daily. I highly recommend the sushi with one of over 200 kinds of sake they stock. After dinner, head to the Japanese-themed bar Hiro for a dimly lit cocktail to lubricate your mind for the music to come. Before you get too excited, this version of seminal punk band Dead Kennedys is missing their iconic vocalist Jello Biafra and guitarist Klause Fluoride making this a somewhat lackluster version of itself. Nevertheless, seeing the remainder of this legendary band is still better than nothing. After trying to gather yourself from your musical mind expansion you might want to head down to Cha An Japanese Tea House to sip some Matcha tea and calm yourself down.

Friday October 15

Location: Noho, NYC
Event: Nightmare: Superstitions Get Tickets Here
Show time: See website for performance schedule; Through November 6
Venue: Noho Event Center
Food: Babbo
Drink: The Dove
Miscellaneous: Café Reggio

The haunted house has become quite a tradition here in NYC in the last few years as the concept has evolved into a first person experience fit for a horror film. At this year’s Nightmare: Superstitions the setting is an insane asylum and superstitions will set you free and there will be plenty of frights along the way. One of the six Italian eateries of celebrity chef Mario Battali, Babbo takes Italian American cooking to another level. While the food can be expensive and reservations would be the best way to get a table, this place is highly regarded among food connoisseurs is is nothing short of amazing. Disguised as a lounge The Dove is really a neighborhood bar dressed up in red, white, and gold décor with a nice selection of beers on tap and a very good mixed drink menu featuring delicious martini’s. One of my favorite coffee houses, Café Reggio has the most literate and West Village atmosphere I have been to. A real slice of New York, it was also in the movie Superfly. Go there or be square!

Saturday October 16

Location: Tribeca, NYC
Bands: Steel Phantoms Get Tickets Here
Show time: 8 PM
Venue: 92Y Tribeca
Food: Pakistan Tea House

Serving up a night of velvet melodies, sunny side up punk and shameless arm swinging with two of Brooklyn’s brightest stars, Steel Phantoms and Unsolved Mysteries, as well as Seattle/New Jersey outfit Motive. Nearby, Pakistan Tea House is a buffet style Indian restaurant where you can choose between chicken, meat, fish and vegetables. It’s affordable and very good. For drinks, check out Mocca Lounge. With a funky interior and a menu of Italian inspired fare, it’s also a bar with a large list of coffees with or without alcohol, beers, and frozen shots. Smack dab in the heart of Chinatown, the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory makes gourmet ice cream flavors like Black Sesame, Ginger, Durian, and more exotic flavors like Taro and Wasabi. Don’t worry, they have the go-to’s like Vanilla, fruits, and chocolate flavors too.

Saturday October 16

Location: Financial District, NYC
Band: Avishai Cohen
Show time: 8 PM
Venue: World Financial Center Winter Garden (220 Vesey Street)
Food: Burritoville
Drink: Jeremy’s Ale House
Miscellaneous: Century 21

Israeli jazz bassist Avishai Cohen is not just a leading figure on the international jazz scene but a composer, improviser and more taking music in new directions. While most people buy hot dogs and grab a beer at expensive restaurants in the Seaport mall, you’ll be smart and head over to Burritoville for inexpensive and delicious California inspired burritos, all under $10. For drinks, Jeremy’s Ale House has a lively crowd and a beer list that will get you a pint for $5 and under. If you get down to the financial district early, check out Century 21. They won’t try to sell you some property, but they have some great designer clothing on the cheap, plus the place is huge to roam.

Sunday October 17

Location: Greenpoint, Brooklyn
Band: Little Teeth
Show time: 8 PM
Venue: Town Hall
Food: Lokal
Drink: Enid’s
Miscellaneous: The Gutter

San Francisco’s Little Teeth truly live up to the term freak folk, playing more than the standard drums, guitar, bass, using whatever they can make a sound from. Joining them for this show is Anni Rossi and Miracles of Modern Science, two bands who are headliners in their own right. Lokal describes itself as a Mediterranean Bistro, though serves up burgers, pizza, and steak. Regardless, the food is delicious, the ambiance nice, is right on McCarren Park AND they serve mulled wine during the winter. For drinks, Enid’s is Greenpoint’s go to bar. With inexpensive drinks and a festive vibe, you’ll be right in the middle of a good time. The Gutter, the new bowling alley and bar, is brought to you by the same owners as Barcade, so you know it will be good. Bowling + Booze = Awesome!
