A Little Night Music @ the Walter Kerr Theatre

I am not the biggest Sondheim fan and musicals don’t usually do it for me either, but A Little Night Music was damn good! More for the amazing people in it, from the stars to the secondary parts and chorus than the actual songs (of which only “Send In the Clowns” I, or anybody, really knows) ALNM was maybe a little long-winded, but really a top notch show about love, lust and old flames. Expecting as I did that Bernadette Peters would be amazing-she was-and that Elaine Stritch would be bawdy-she was-I was also truly tickled by the performances of the absolutely engaging Stephen R. Buntrock and scene-stealer Leigh Ann Larkin as “Petra.”  Stritch more or less talks her way through songs like “Liaisons” (one of the better songs in a too-long act one) and Peters’ manages delicious asides during the same act, but it is during the second act, when all the principals are in the same place and farce ensues, that ALNM takes off. And being present when Bernadette Peters sings “Send In The Clowns” was one of the best moments of theater I have ever witnessed. In fact, if for no other reason to see A Little Night Music (and there are many) you must see Bernadette Peters clutch your heart and never let go when she delivers this song.

A Little Night Music has been extended with performances now running through January 9th and is playing at the Walter Kerr Theatre, 219 West 48th Street. For more information, you can visit http://www.nightmusiconbroadway.com/.
