Parlour’s latest album, Simulacrenfield, feels like the perfect movie. It is full of elegant, on-the-edge-of-a-cliff drama and alluring mystery that shifts at a pace that viewers are always one step behind, like wistful spectators. The high-end epic mastery of well-executed, yet sounding of churning tidal waves, sounds pushes richly against multi-textured instrumentation.

While the horn riffs, guitars and steady percussion trade off at some points, the instruments war against one another at other times. Comprised of guitars, bass clarinet, bass guitar, saxophone and keyboards, the steadiness of the hard rhythms is masterful. With a backdrop of a jazz-like syncopated drum, each variation fits nicely between the sea of floating horn riffs and windy thrills of guitar.

“Camus” is a rigorous track of crashing centerpieces of bass horns furiously tumbling over a pushy percussive piece that is heightened by loops of snarky horns. “Jalepeñooptics” is gorgeous as the thriving rhythm creates a sandcastle of a fuzzy guitar over crashes of high hats and melancholy bass lines.
