Friday June 24

Location: Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Bands: Thievery Corporation Get Tickets Here
Show time: 8 PM
Venue: Williamsburg Waterfront
Food: SEA
Drink: Zablozki’s
Miscellaneous: Lovin Cup Cafe

Down-tempo DJ duo Thievery Corporation play Williamsburg and bring new music with their album Culture of Fear which will most likely see the duo blend jazz, dub, and bossa nova among other things that have helped make their records great. Also on board for this one are Raphael Saadiq and the awesome Dam-Funk. Just as much fun as any show and just as big a venue, SEA is one BIG Thai restaurant. Big enough to have a pool surrounded by tables as a giant Buddha stands above it. Luckily, the food is really great. Offering traditional Pad Thai ($7) to more involved dishes like the Mummy Fish ($14). On N6th, a street full of bars and restaurants, Zablozki’s is the local bar of the bunch, with a pool table and a friendly atmosphere and 12 beers on tap. Cafe, bar, restaurant and music venue (Cameo) in the back, Lovin Cup Cafe is an all-in-one that offers up some incredible stoner food like nutella and banana on grilled sourdough ($9), making this a fave joint if you’re in the mood for comfort food with a twist.

Friday June 24

Location: Lower East Side, NYC
Bands: David S. Ware
Show time: 8 PM
Venue: The Stone
Food: Supper
Drink: Barramundi
Miscellaneous: Kudos

David S. Ware is one of avant-garde jazz’s best around and has worked with legends (Andrew Cyrille) and current stars (Matthew Shipp, William Parker, and Susie Ibarra) and many others. He’s a saxophonist who will melt your mind, in a good way of course! A favorite restaurant of mine, Supper has a dimly lit, all-wood interior giving it a rustic vibe. They even have what looks like a bar overlooking the chefs cooking for you to watch. The Italian menu offers some fantastic food too. Though it might sound like it has to do with Buddhism, Barramundi is actually an Australian owned bar that has infused vodkas, sangria, and a laundry list of mixed drinks like the Champagne Cocktail made with sugar and bitters with Courvoisier, topped with bubbly. If coffee and a snack is your thing, Kudos is an inexpensive place to get baked goods, a cup of coffee and chill before the show.

Saturday June 25

Location: Midtown West, NYC
Bands: Lee Fields & The Expressions
Show time: 4 PM; FREE
Venue: Central Park SummerStage
Food: Brother Jimmy’s Bait Shack
Drink: BB&R
Miscellaneous: Dylan’s Candy Bar

This show is a stacked bill of old school inspired music! If you’re a fan of gritty 60s Stax soul you can’t miss Lee Fields & The Expressions who make music as raw as the originals, plus Fitz & The Tantrums offer up more of an 80s dance/soul vibe (think ABC), while Andreya Triana and Rich Medina round out this incredible bill. If you’ve got a craving for barbeque, check out Brother Jimmy’s Bait Shack as the ribs, chicken, beef, and pork are all smothered in some amazing BBQ sauce. BB&R, which stands for Blonde, Brunette, and a Redhead is the brainchild of three best friends. What they’ve created is something between a neighborhood bar and a lounge with leather seats in the front and a pool table, photo booth, and video games in the back. Looking more like it came out of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Dylan’s Candy Bar is a colorful place to get lollipops, licorice, and all things sugary. Don’t go crazy or your sweet tooth might melt here!

Saturday June 25

Location: Union Square, NYC
Event: The Awesome 80s Prom
Show time: 8 PM
Venue: Webster Hall
Food: Thai Me Up Sandwich Bar
Drink: McSorley’s Old Ale House
Miscellaneous: Mudd Cafe

Relive the best and worst of coming of age in high school at The Awesome 80s Prom. This interactive show is part musical and full-on party as the audience gets to drink, dance and vote for the Prom King and Queen. For eats, check out Thai Me Up Sandwich Bar, a sandwich shop offering Thai sandwiches with 7 Steamed Fried Vegetables and a choice of chicken, veggie, tofu or beef on a baguette with 3 types of sauces for $7. One of the city’s oldest bars, at McSorley’s Old Ale House you can feel the history when you enter as memorabilia, since its beginnings in 1854, are all over the walls. Aside from it being a frat hangout nowadays, it’s worth the trip. You’ve seen that orange Mudd coffee truck parked on Astor Place and on various other streets, but check out their Mudd Cafe on East 9th for coffee and a healthy, vegan, and vegetarian menu.

Sunday June 26

Location: Midtown West, NYC
Theater: The Shaggs: Philosophy of the World
Show time: See website for schedule; Through July 3
Venue: Playwrights Horizons
Food: Barking Dog Luncheonette
Drink: The Auction House
Miscellaneous: Uptown Lounge

In The Shaggs: Philosophy of the World, picture it, Fremont, NH, the late ’60s. A working class dad has a vision of rock n’ roll destiny for his three talentless daughters, convinced they’re his family’s one-way ticket out of hardship and obscurity. But the girls have ideas of their own — and as their father’s ambition turns to obsession, the price of familial obligation becomes all too clear. With all original music inspired by the stranger-than-fiction true story of The Shaggs. If you love dogs, not hot dogs but real doggies, then you’ll really love the Barking Dog Luncheonette, as the décor features everything with a dog on it. The food, is your regular diner fare with plenty of burger, sandwich, and hot plate options. Grab a drink and feel like you were transported to the late 1800’s at The Auction House. With ornamental red velvet couches, exposed brick walls, and vintage chandeliers, this hidden gem of a bar is cozy. Beautifully designed, Uptown Lounge is a bar and restaurant serving American fare like Apple Peppercorn Pork Chops ($18), while being big enough to stick around afterwards for drinks.
