Los Angeles-based rapper Omni has a very distinctive voice. His new album, IAMOMNI, was produced by legendary trip hop icon Tricky. Omni viciously delves into a super self-empowering mantra that features a global world view and a subsequent call to action. No doubt because of Tricky’s legendary signature in the arena of trip hop and electronica, the album feels both calm and ready. “All Over” features the vocals of singer Kassia Conway. The full-throttle rocket power is of arena-sized proportions. Omni demands, “If they don’t ever accept the options, we may never get to change the outcome. Learn to understand. Grab a hand and lead” over a mainstream rock edge. The song is crafted with such a neo-rock edge it seems as if U2 would arm wrestle for it. “Diamond Hunter” carries on the rock fist pump push as well. The haze of “Animal,” featuring singer Tiki Lewis sustains a more old school hip hop percussion run and a set of bleary keys. Timid beats run the course while Omni is sizing up a woman he fancies. The beats continue to break further and further apart. “Push Dub” hypnotically moves in dub step rhythms while Omni’s rhymes run hot and slow like lava. IAMOMNI is an album with a rap foundation, however with the infusion of trip hop and hip hop, flecks of rock and punk-styled vocals at times, Omni’s apparent lyrical gift is dynamic. He raps, “I ain’t rhyming like I have a diamond in my ear. The style is brand new.” Indeed.
