FILM: Seeking Justice starring Nicolas Cage

What does Nicolas Cage do when he isn’t busy turning into a skull-headed ball of flame and tearing up town on his blazing motorcycle? Apparently, he’s busy evading a web of vigilantes who want to see him dead. In Roger Donaldson’s new thriller, Seeking Justice, Nicolas Cage plays high school teacher Will Gerard, who lives in crime-ridden New Orleans and whose musician wife, Laura (a fresh-faced January Jones), is brutally beaten and raped. In a moment of vulnerability, Will agrees to let an ominous character (Guy Pearce) going by the name of Simon “take care of” the delinquent who assaulted his wife in exchange for an undisclosed favor at a later date, and the story takes off at a no-time-to-take-a-bathroom-break pace.

When Will refuses to participate in Simon’s underground justice squad, he quickly finds himself on the front page of every paper in town for a murder he didn’t commit. He has to move quickly before a web of vigilantes, (or rather a team of too-easy-to-spot henchman: cartoonish goons dressed all in black), closes in on him. You barely have time to catch your breath while watching the film. Cage is in his element and Pearce definitely pulls off someone you wouldn’t want to upset. A few points in the plot are explained away a little too briefly (or not at all), but it doesn’t detract from the fun of the quick-paced film. There are enough gun fights, car chases and scuffles to keep the audience entertained. The action beats out the plot in this exciting flick and if you don’t peer too far beneath the surface you’ll enjoy the ride.

Seeking Justice starring: Nicolas Cage, January Jones, Guy Pearce, Harold Perrineau, and Jennifer Carpenter opens March 16 in theaters.
