When I first heard TV Girl’s “If You Want It” back in 2010 I loved it immediately so I was thrilled to see that the San Diego two-piece, comprised of Trung Ngo and Brad Petering, recently released a full mix tape entitled The Wild, The Innocent, The TV Shuffle.
The mix tape consists of fifteen short tracks, the longest being “Mirror Mirror,†which is just under four minutes. It’s the short, bright, poppy, sample-driven tunes though that make the release great, like the awesome two-minute intro track “Keep Me Distracted,†“Sweaters,†which clocks in at 1:24, and the 17-second “Flip The Record,†which features Sesame Street’s Grover talking over a drum solo.
“Jane’s Critique†is also a funny addition, as we hear Petering’s mother giving a 28-second critique of the record, presumably on his answering machine. I have to agree with Jane, who says that “The Artist†is her favorite track, because it succeeds without the cool, hip samples and shows that the guys aren’t a one-trick pony. That’s not to say that the pony wouldn’t be awesome though because there is something about this music that pulls the listener in. While there isn’t any huge standout song per se, it’s the mix tape in its entirety that stands out.
