I can think of few shows that would have been better to break a month long fast on live music than the determined rocking outs of Here We Go Magic. Any fears of seeing ‘just another indie rock’ band play were quickly dispelled watching them perform. As a newbie to this group’s music, it’s easy now to see why this band has earned rave reviews in the past.

The band, currently a trio following the departure of their bassist, brought the live roster to a count of five with a little help from friends from Hospitality (bass) and Glass Ghost (keys/samples). These additions were great, as they let the band’s two guitarists focus on some really cool active tunes that highlight their sound. I found myself grooving out to the often funky arrangements the band played, which definitely come alive outside the studio. I’m most familiar with last year’s laudable LP, A Different Ship, the songs of which were featured prominently this evening.

The supporting act tonight was a band I hadn’t heard prior, Love as Laughter. Their compositions feature guitar, keyboard, bass and percussion, void of electronics. Their sound squarely reminds me of the softer side of a post hardcore act, which makes sense given their frontman’s history with the band Lync. I definitely appreciated their play, and their tenure impresses. Their last release was 2008’s Holy, their sixth album.
