Adam Ant channels Dylan (slightly) on the opening strut and jangle of “Cool Zombie.” This tune, and a whopping 16 others, are from Ant’s new album (his first in 17 years!), Adam Ant Is the BlueBlack Hussar Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter. As a very Bowie-like chameleon, Mr. Ant is updating his Kings of the Wild Frontier persona, grown older here, and leading the charge on songs concerning mental illness, trials and tribulations and views on how the music industry treats its artists.

“Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter” is a great dance tune with an uncomfortable beat (lest we forget how well Ant does dance music) and a spoken vocal. “Valentines” and “Darlin’ Boy” are acoustic songs that pretty much just meander. “Vivienne’s Tears” and “Who’s a Goofy Bunny?” are much better attempts at John Lennon-like softer guitar movers. “Goofy” has a cool stop-and-go beat.

This sixth solo album from Ant is not an easy listen. But there are tunes like “Punkyoungirl,” with a real tight beatbox-like bed and “Cradle Your Hatred,” which has a nice electric guitar-picked ballad and sweet lyrics. “Shrink” has an overdriven guitar and Nine Inch Nails-like verse. There’s also the positively Ant-like, infectious “How Can I Say I Miss You?” (it’s tough instrumental reprise is the last tune here) and  “Bullshit,” rockin’ with its noisy backing track, upfront tribal beat, and a big anthem backing vocal.
