Smell the DA.I.S.Y.
(self-released)

De La Soul’s new mixtape, Smell the DA.I.S.Y., features the group’s signature charismatic and organically conscious rap and rhyme styles reworked with beats by the phenomenal J Dilla. Many became instantly enamored with De La Soul in 1989 with the iconic album, 3 Feet High and Rising, as it contained classics like “Me, Myself and I” and “Buddy.” Hopefully as a precursor to new material coming later this year, Smell the DA.I.S.Y. remains mesmerizing. J Dilla, whose work has been so widely respected, remains exceptionally revered even after he passed away in 2006. His work on this project and others continues to reverberate with much magnitude and vibrancy. The formula of chunky beats and De La Soul’s stream of conscious still feels powerful and special. In light of time and changing styles, the mixtape possesses that same flair that made fans out of many. “No More No Less” feels like carefree child’s play and at its breakdown is brilliant and dizzying. The rhythmic bounce of “Dilla Plugged In” is effortlessly joyous and “Goes With the Word” has an edgy grind.
