Sam Smith is the pop-soul singer on everyone’s radar. His debut full-length album, In the Lonely Hour, is number one in the UK, has reached the Billboard Top 200 in the U.S. and he’s also one of Billboard’s “14 Artists to Watch in 2014.” Tapping into “unrequited love and loneliness” as well as isolation and jealousy, the 22-year-old writes openly and honestly about the ways and means of that thing called l-o-v-e.

On tracks like “Leave Your Lover,” “I’m Not the Only One” and the popular “Stay With Me,” Smith, who admits he’s never been in a relationship before but “really wanted to make an album that was about love,” has shared a project that’s innocent, if not brazen. (Listen to the aforementioned tracks for explanation.)

The British singer is very much a pop artist – albeit with songwriting skills, string accompaniment, acoustic guitars, pianos, and gospel backdrops. But the kid also grew up listening to Chaka Khan and the late Whitney Houston, so it’ll be nice to see how he evolves in the future.
