Finding new Faves at Brooklyn Pour

Brooklyn PourOver 70 brewers showed up for The Village Voice’s fourth annual Brooklyn Pour event on Saturday. Held at the very-cool former Williamsburg Bank in Ft. Greene, it was a good opportunity for beer snobs to taste some new ales and stouts without having to buy them by the glass. Of course, seasonal beers were well-represented, and I was a big fan of Heartland Brewery’s Smiling Pumpkin Ale. It’s a full-flavored beer made with honey-roasted pumpkins and simmered with spices. Heartland has five locations in Manhattan, so it shouldn’t be too hard to chase down a glass to get your fall fix. Stumptown Coffee Roasters teamed up with Captain Lawrence to create a drink they were calling Witches Brew that was something like a Black and Tan made with coffee and beer that was also quite tasty. Another standout was a deliciously hoppy American Red Ale called Gangster Duck from a microbrewery named Radiant Pig. The name “Gangster Duck” comes from a reference made about the 1983 art/hip hop “Beat Bop” collaboration between Basquiat, Rammellzee and K-Rob. Currently the beer is only made in draft, so trying this one may mean doing some homework. There were so many good beers at the event, and the lines moved quickly. Everyone I spoke with found something they liked (and, coincidently, no one seemed to like the same beers). All in all, not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
