Born in Budapest, Hungary, Delilah inherited her gift of music from her parents, who immersed her in performing from an early age. Unfortunately, this joy of music was overshadowed by politics and in order to escape racial tension in Hungary, Delilah’s family moved to Toronto, Canada in 1998. Never one to be without a song, this beautiful singer earned a reputation as a professional songstress in the Toronto area by the age of 19. With timeless vocals reminiscent of greats like Natalie Cole and Nancy Wilson, Delilah presents her collection: Delilah Sings Sarah + 1″ EP ( A Tribute to Sarah Vaughn).

Beginning with “September in the Rain,” we are treated to much of the dark control of this lady’s voice as the stellar backing from the musicians (especially notable are drums and piano…wow!). The strut to “Whatever Lola Wants” again sees the snare rim hits and piano roiling around perfectly under Delilah’s snap and her rangy naughtiness here. The lady is certainly on top of her game on this standard.

The extra track here though is what does it for me especially, a swirling, lush cover of Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile,” one of my personal favorites. Delilah is so present, letting notes tickle away, purposely not enunciating ends of certain phrases while rounding out others; this is a supreme performance of vocal control and phrasing understanding.
