We Are King is a lushly hypnotic album that makes love to your mind and ears all at the same time. Containing dreamy, soul soundscapes, the much-anticipated debut is from L.A.-based trio KING, consisting of sisters Paris and Amber Strother and friend Anita Bias. Why the name KING? Because they are in charge of their music careers. They self-released the album on their own label, KING Creative, they wrote their own music, and Paris served as producer and keyboardist, while Amber and Anita mostly maintained vocals. However, their harmonies are so in sync sometimes it’s hard to even distinguish who’s singing what song. And that’s one of the great joys of the record; it warms your soul a like hot cup of tea. Having been lauded by artists such as Prince, Questlove, Robert Glasper and Erykah Badu, the ladies have presented a perfect follow-up to their 2011 EP, The Story, where all songs reappear as extended mixes on We Are King. From the romanticism of “The Right One” and “The Greatest,” to the wanderlust of “Red Eye,” down to the wistful soul of “Oh Please!,” We Are King has set the bar high for R&B/soul releases for the rest of the year.
