Gowanus’ ever-flourishing food scene now has a new addition with a charming backyard, plenty of beer options, and an inspired food menu. HENRI’s Backyard is the second restaurant from owner Binh Douglas of the HENRI Hospitality Group after sister restaurant, HENRI On Fifth, opened in Park Slope last year.

The first thing bar connoisseurs may notice is the large variety of beers on tap.  During my visit, the evening weather was perfect for sitting out back on a barstool next to the AstroTurf-covered walls of the bar and sampling some of the cocktails and cool beers on tap like Radiant Pig’s hoppy Junior India Pale Ale and the peculiarly delightful Grapefruit Shandy from Illusive Traveler.

The leafy trees and string lights create an intimate space that would make for an excellent spot to bring a summer date, and the servers are so delightful you may not even mind if your date’s conversation is about as exciting as your boss’ recap of his family-filled weekend.

The food also impresses. The menu has a handful of tasty, expertly executed appetizers like Mushroom Croquettes, fried breadcrumb rolls filled with juicy shitake and Portobello mushrooms served with truffle aioli, and Stuffed Sweets, mini tempura fried bell peppers filled with quinoa stir fry served with charred avocado salsa. The main dishes didn’t disappoint either, especially the super-soft Vietnamese Baby Back Ribs that slip off the bone and deliver a scrumptious flavor that may rival your goodnight kiss, making the night a hit (even if your date’s a miss).
