Tedeschi Trucks Band shows off their skills with their second live album Live From the Fox Oakland. Having seen them three times in the past few years, I’ve already been enlightened as to what they can do. If seeing them live is not a possibility, thankfully this release is the next best thing. The musical partnership continues between husband and wife Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks along with their twelve-piece band, all contributing equally as one big happy family. The album starts off nicely with “Don’t Know What It Means,” offering a wall of sound similar to what I was greeted with when seeing them for the first time. The band then tackles with ease the Derek and the Dominoes song “Keep On Growing,” making it their own. Multiple genres are represented throughout, including the gospel-influenced “Bird On the Wire,” the soulful feel of “I Want More,” and the bluesy “I Pity the Fool.” A bit of a surprise, the band does a nice rendition of George Harrison’s “Within You, Without You” from the legendary Sgt. Peppers album. The song is accompanied nicely with the Indian-influenced “These Walls.” Derek Trucks’ signature guitar work is front and center throughout the album, in step with Susan Tedeschi’s powerful vocals. Wisely, it is a completely different set of songs from their 2012 live release Everybody’s Talkin’ encouraging sales while pleasing their fans at the same time. Seeing them live is certainly best, but Live From the Fox Oakland is excellent at giving the listener a hint of the magic that is Tedeschi Trucks Band.
