Los Angeles pop/electropop artist Carly Harpur Hollander’s new EP, Turn Down Your Mind, Open Your Eyes is a tightly woven concoction. Hollander claims her music is meant to “reflect a philosophy of resilience and unbridled positivity” and here with these tunes she just about does exude this ethos.

“Little Less Shy” opens, built around a shunky drum loop with some well-placed and well-played electric rhythms and a big poppy chorus. “Satellite,” with its quieter ‘plinky’ key sounds, follows, providing more welcome space where it is just Hollander’s sweet vocal against the keys until once again she slips in a big singable chorus of “ah ah ah’s,” and the beat gets jumping for her dance fans.

“Game Face” utilizes swirly keys and plumping bass for one of the more kinetic runs on the EP. Hollander rap-singing over this song is lots of fun and feeds right into a jam with her vocals and the bass at about the 2:30 mark, extending the tune into a more obvious dance track than any other she presents here.

The last tune “Don’t Turn Off the Night” is the best for me. It’s got a desperate sadness underlying what I feel is the best key layering, and lyrics that makes you feel you’re standing right next to Hollander as she probes her place in the big city.

Carly Harpur Hollander Turn Down Your Mind, Open Your Eyes is solid dance-able pop stuff.
