John Leguizamo’s Latin History For Morons

You’re bound to learn lots about history you don’t know in John Leguizamo’s Latin History For Morons, as much as enjoy the talented Leguizamo running, dancing, recreating battles and attacking his blackboard. It’s a wild 90 or so minutes of a ride down at the old Studio 54, Leguizamo preaching pretty much to an audience bent so far forward for affirmation they are nearly pitching out of their seats, confirming with their call-outs and hard applause, Leguizamo’s claim that the current administration has declared war on the Latino population.

Whether this assessment is accurate, Leguizamo rallies the audience to his side quickly. The guy is pretty much a self-defined performer/writer for the ghettto who has made good for us all and New York theatre audiences love him. Spinning a narrative of how he came to help his son with a school project and unearthed so much rich history of the Latin people he himself had no idea of, Leguizamo presents less a laugh-a-minute show-in fact there are sections where you sit back and simply get schooled-and only a few moments of characterizations he is known for.

It’s not that exactly you ever grow bored here, but  Latin History For Morons is lacking in depth beyond the diatribe. Maybe because I was hoping I’d laugh more than I did, maybe because, by now, I have been getting hit over the head about Trump’s policies so much I want to shout at a Leguizamo, Stephen Colbert, Bill Mahr, that I get it, but man might there be something else to rail against, to attack the bad orange boogey man in some other more creative way?

John Leguizamo’s Latin History For Morons runs for 16 weeks, until February 4, 2018. For more info and to purchase tickets, please visit https://www.latinhistorybroadway.com/.
