Hot on the heels of her appearance in the summer hit movie “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” Cher is covering ABBA on her 26th studio release, Dancing Queen.

Nine songs other than the opening title track are featured here: “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” — wow lots of Auto-Tune on this one —  “The Name of the Game,” “SOS,” “Waterloo,” “Mamma Mia,” “Chiquitita,” “Fernando,” “The Winner Takes It All,” and “One Of Us.”

“The Name of the Game,” is subtly updated with a sly beat in the verse especially, “SOS,” though sounding pretty much like the original (including the signature 70s-sounding synths) Cher manages very strong vocals here as well as on “Fernando.” My favorite all-time ABBA tune “The Winner Takes It All,” really benefits from Cher’s signature lower warble. She really does have a great voice, even at the ripe old age of  72 and on a spectacular tune like this, really the mix can’t be beat.

There is no denying that these ABBA tunes are great. Better pop tunes might not have ever been written actually. And having an icon of Cher’s status wailing round these, even with the over use of Auto-Tune, makes Dancing Queen a fun listen. The lady isn’t breaking any new ground with these versions, but it’s Cher does ABBA. What more do you need?
