Zero 7 @ Terminal 5, 11/27/09

Zero 7 made their first appearance after three years to anticipatory fans at Terminal 5. Although they’d lost Sia in the meantime, they’d acquired several new singers, namely Eska, who appears on their latest album Yeah Ghost, and folk collaborator, Olivia Chaney. The overall show was very mellow, with several songs featuring instrumentals and bobbing heads. The presentation of Eska to the audience was quite exciting, as it was announced that it was her first time performing in front of a live New York audience ever. The audience’s questions, “Where’s Sia?” were seeming to be outshown by this new singer. Chaney danced subtly in the background but gave a nice new, gospel-like rendition to the song “In the Waiting Line.” Still, though, fans seemed to want more than they gave. Zero 7 has talent, with or without any female singers, and if they looked further inward at what the essence of their group is, they might have retained some of that and delivered more of that last night instead of what was mainly a show of new talent.
