David Cross: Bigger and Blackerer

David Cross has proven himself to be a prolific actor and writer so it’s a surprise that it’s taken him six years to release a new stand up special DVD, but Bigger and Blackerer is a leap from his previous material giving a much better look into what the comic is all about with its questions about drugs, religion and Obama’s desire to kill your grandparents. The show, which is filmed in Boston, moves quickly through diverse topics such as date rape and racism and some a brief skits in the opening like an interaction with a planted audience member, but the comic focuses mainly on his distaste with organized religion and right wing conservatives as well as the fan favorite, improvements on everyday objects that need no improvement.
If you walked away from the last comedy special with the word “squalgel†in mind, the comic offers a great deal more material in this performance and hits the mark with imagined conversations with friends and Jesus as he acts out the ludicrous. Cross spends the most time discussing religion which is also the strongest material in the show and he throws out a number of funny ponderences such as questioning how the gravity situation works in heaven. The DVD also includes some bonus material such as clips from performances in other states and some cuts that didn’t make the DVD which are well worth checking out. Overall, the show is Cross’s strongest stand-up performance to date thanks in large part to its honesty and authentic material.
