From blues men (and women) to activists, from folk artists, rock stars and historians (sometimes one person wears all these hats); at open air festivals to behind the stage to Madison Square Garden; playing instruments, laughing with friends, chillin’ with families, Herb Wise has photographed some of the most iconic figures of jazz, blues, folk and pretty much everything in between. Collected with Wise’s insightful captions, the coffee table-sized People You’d Like To Know: Legendary Musicians Photographed by Herb Wise is a beautiful tome.

Wise started his photography career quite by accident (detailed at the beginning of the book) and his natural approach, the way in which these portraits never seem posed, even when they are, makes the subjects of his work vibrant. A good many of the people here are dead (these photo’s date from the 60’s and 70’s when a lot of these artists were already in their sixties and older) but they are alive in this book of photography.

The last section of “People” celebrates New Orleans (pre flood) by featuring the cornucopia of professional and amateur musicians who populated the streets, bars and byways of the city Wise calls “the crucible of American music.” A good number of the people here are not so well-known but those that are not are well worth the research for sure. At the very least, feast your eyes on a luscious book of photography from a true American master.

  1. This book is definitely worth a read – awesome photos. Would love to have been in my prime 40 years ago. Love that era.
