Just when you thought they were gone forever, Britpop and glam rock geniuses Suede have reunited and resurfaced with a The Best Of album, which features remastered versions of singles, album tracks and B-sides. This mixtape of sorts reintroduces the band nicely just before their upcoming performances in California (including Coachella) and different cities in Western Europe.

One thing is for certain about this album, Suede’s The Best Of isn’t for diehard Suedeheads (we’ve already got it all), but rather it’s for new fans of Suede, who have a chance to jump on a bandwagon of which they’ll never jump off.

Led by vocalist Brett Anderson and guitarist Bernard Butler, Suede joined the Britpop scene in early 1993 with the creation of their self-titled debut, which became the fastest-selling debut LP in UK history. Suede quickly became highly successful because of the way they could create complex pop songs that were dramatic and articulated the desires and feelings of the outsider while still remaining radio-friendly. They also reintroduced British guitar music, which had been drowned out by grunge at the time of their emergence.

It is undeniable that Suede was at its best when Anderson and Butler made music together, and this can be seen in the song selection on The Best Of. While the first disc features many famous singles (including a few inessential tracks), the second shows where their talents really are, containing tracks and B-sides mostly from the era surrounding the band’s debut.

Overall, the album is an accurate depiction of who Suede was to the public and to their fans. Clearly, at least two discs were necessary to show this to the new generation. Let’s hope there’s more to come.
