There’s wacky fun to be had down in the East Village. Presented by the award winning Toy Box Theatre Company, David Caudle’s The Short Fall is a near 2 hours of rollicking satirical fun, with actors performing multiple roles, sets being changed with lightening speed, gun shots, a live light piano score and an entire story that unfolds from a flashback.

Caudle’s story is one that is convoluted in the best sense of the term but it unfolds perfectly, through stellar performances of this six member cast, with the incandescent performance of Dori Legg leading it all. I believe satire is one of the hardest genres to pull off, especially in a live theater setting; too often a writer will belabor points thinking they need to be hammered into an audience’s brain so they don’t miss the piece’s deeper meaning. But to Caudle’s credit, David Michael Holmes’ perfect blocking and all the actors (along with Legg there is: Ron Bopst, Ryan Cowell, Kally Duling, Ryan Reilly and energetic Karen Stanion) they play the action without a trip up or moment when they take you out of the action by playing too broad.

The Short Fall is another winner for Toy Box, but get down and see it quick, it closes June18. For more info visit www.toyboxtheatre.org.
