Here I Am, the new album from Kelly Rowland, former member of Destiny’s Child, is a club escapade from beginning to end. Aside from the searing slow-wind sexiness of the wildly successful summer hit, “Motivation,” a handful of similar burners beckon on the album as well. Full of floor-rumbling bass, winding beats, and simplistic self-assured lyrics, the album is definitely meant to be played loudly. The collaboration with renowned house DJ/producer David Guetta on “Commander” is a highly wound-up stomp fest of beats and sythns set on stun. “Lay It On Me,” begins with Big Sean’s blazing requests that work raunchily well against the carnival-fused barrage of bright beats. The idea behind “Feeling Me Right Now,” is essentially that, a softened piano riff starts off the track with Rowland singing to a girl she sees in the VIP section at a club. She sings, “I fell in the love in the club tonight. I’m feeling me right now.” A hard to pull off clever anthem on self-acceptance and pride, and yet it works. Slower paced songs such as “Keep It Between Us” and “All of the Night,” are palpitating takes on love and sensuality, sprinkled with just enough upbeat rhythms and radiation that make the album the modern woman’s answer to loving oneself, having fun, and the freedom that comes along with it.
