If coffee is your thing, The Verb Café offers not only coffee but sandwiches, desserts, and soup. Friday October 7

Location: Gowanus, Brooklyn
Bands: The Mekons Get Tickets Here
Show time: 8 PM
Venue: Bell House
Food: El Viejo Yayo
Drink: Buttermilk Bar
Miscellaneous: The Chocolate Room

The Mekons have been first wave punk since the beginning of first wave, making them one of the longest running British punk acts around, only rivaled by The Fall. Prolific, the band has since its inception incorporated folk and country, changing and evolving their style of music for themselves and their fans. Joining them is singer/songwriter Chris Mills. Keeping the night going, try El Viejo Yayo for dinner. This gorgeous and warm restaurant has an elegant dining room and an affordable menu offering Dominican/Latin cuisine. The outside of Buttermilk Bar may look non-descript, but looks are deceiving . . . just not in this case, as this low-key watering hole is where you can grab a cheap drink in a friendly atmosphere, while playing a board game or two. With a near insane menu of chocolates from coffee and tea to delectable dessert, and even beer, The The Chocolate Room is a great way to end the night on a high note.

Location: Prospect Heights, Brooklyn
Art: Ten Years Later: Ground Zero Remembered
Show time: See website for schedule; Through October 30
Venue: Brooklyn Museum
Food: Tom’s Restaurant
Drink: Soda Bar
Miscellaneous: Old Brooklyn Parlor

In recognition of the tenth anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Ten Years Later: Ground Zero Remembered honors those who were lost and those who have suffered and triumphed in the face of that day’s adversities. On view are works by the artists Michael Richards and Christoph Draeger. While Richards’s sculpture is a tribute to the African American aviators of World War II known as the Tuskegee airmen, it can also be seen as a commemoration of all those who died in the World Trade Center attack, including Richards himself. Draeger’s giant jigsaw puzzle deals with memory in a different way, commenting on the dissemination of press images in the wake of a disastrous event. In addition, two reflection books on view contain comments from Museum visitors responding to images of Ground Zero exhibited at the Museum for the first anniversary of 9/11, in 2002. It’s the place where Susanne Vega wrote “Tom’s Restaurant,” but Tom’s Restaurant is just as famous for its food. With a near insane breakfast menu, expect items like pancakes with apples and pecans to be brought to you by the sweetest waitresses in Brooklyn. Soda Bar is a great place for drinks. The alcohol is cheap, there’s surprisingly excellent food, and there’s even another room where DJs spin. If it’s too much, you can hang outside in the backyard patio under the stars. The Old Brooklyn Parlor specializes in old school drinks like the Brooklyn Egg Cream and the Lime Cherry Rickey, making it an excellent anchor to this neighborhood.

Saturday October 8
Location: Midtown West, NYC
Art: Karthik Pandian: Unearth
Show time: See website for schedule; Through March 30
Venue: Whitney Museum of American Art
Food: Brother Jimmy’s Bait Shack
Drink: BB&R
Miscellaneous: Dylan’s Candy Bar

Los Angeles-based artist Karthik Pandian uses 16mm film and architectural constructions to examine the relationship between ancient and modern cultures and the ways in which contemporary societies understand and treat the monuments of societies past. Unearth grows out of Pandian’s two-year investigation into the ancient Native American city of Cahokia, the remnants of which are located outside and underneath the site of present day East St. Louis, IL. If you’ve got a craving for barbeque, check out Brother Jimmy’s Bait Shack as the ribs, chicken, beef, and pork are all smothered in some amazing BBQ sauce. BB&R, which stands for Blonde, Brunette, and a Redhead is the brainchild of three best friends. What they’ve created is something between a neighborhood bar and a lounge with leather seats in the front and a pool table, photo booth, and video games in the back. Looking more like it came out of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Dylan’s Candy Bar is a colorful place to get lollipops, licorice, and all things sugary. Don’t go crazy though, or your sweet tooth might melt here!

Sunday October 9

Location: Midtown West, NYC
Art: Xaviar Cha: Body Drama
Show time: See website for schedule; Daily
Venue: Whitney Museum of American Art
Food: Brother Jimmy’s Bait Shack
Drink: BB&R
Miscellaneous: Dylan’s Candy Bar

In Xaviar Cha: Body Drama, NY–based artist Xavier Cha incorporates video and installation in performances that play with multiple perspectives and deferred access, reflecting our fractured contemporary experience. For her new work Body Drama, Cha transforms the gallery into a mysterious setting in which an actor performs while wearing a body-mounted camera. In between performances the resulting footage is projected on the wall, offering viewers two versions of the same experience, both of which center on disorienting psychological and physical space.
