What can you possibly say about Mike Patton that hasn’t already been said? You could say he sucks, but who would believe that? For years, through his work with such acts as Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, Peeping Tom, Fantomas and Tomahawk, he has proven time and again that he rules. Nothing has changed with the release of The Solitude of Prime Numbers soundtrack. Part of this release is music that is actually used for the film and the rest of it is music that was inspired by the book of the same name. Patton has never been one to paint himself into a musical corner as any release with his name on it can prove, but he still manages to stretch out in a new way this time around.

The Solitude of Prime Numbers is a dark soundscape of brooding dread and loneliness that will take you to a place not everyone is prepared to go. You don’t have to be familiar with the book or film to enjoy the mood Patton creates, but it’s obvious that the material the music was written for is not of the “feel-good” nature. It’s hard to point out any one particular track since this release works so well as a whole, never really breaking away from the feeling it establishes right away. That kind of consistency is hard to come by these days in music. You won’t even notice that a new track has started since it moves along flawlessly. It’s sometimes hard to believe the man responsible for this excellent release is the same guy who rapped through a metal song and then imitated a fish out of water on stage at the MTV Video Awards over twenty years ago.

With such a long-standing career, Mike Patton has made it clear that he doesn’t like dull moments. Luckily for us, he’s yet to deliver one. The Solitude of Prime Numbers  is another win.
