Aesop Rock @ Irving Plaza, 2/9/12

Aesop RockFast lyrics of the esoteric variety define Aesop Rock. Keeping up with his rapping can be quite a challenge, but very rewarding. Many others share these sentiments, as Irving Plaza was bustling shortly after doors. He is currently on tour supporting last year’s album, Skelethon. His performances on this tour clock in around ninety minutes in length.

I learned tonight about Aesop Rock’s funky new tradition of giving haircuts on stage. One lucky high-schooler had his hair butchered on stage to “Racing Stripes” by the show’s opener, Busdriver. His set, by the way, had some exciting vibes. He’s a solo artist who raps at a frenetic pace, a really fitting support pick for the tour. Check out his latest LP, Beau$Eros.

Aesop Rock plays on stage supported by his collaborators Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz, who provide secondary vocals and beats respectively; the trio forms the collective, Hail Mary Mallon. Songs featuring his individual collaborators were performed, which can be a mixed bag depending on your interest level outside of Aesop himself. Visuals and music videos for every song played on a projector behind the group, a nice touch to a show that already had a high energy level. Aesop Rock continues his tour westward, culminating with appearances at Coachella.
