Nightswim, the new album by Australia’s Owl Eyes, (also known as Brooke Addamo) operates in its own singular world of nicely layered pushes of cascading synthesizers, slaying house beats and Addamo’s stretchy, silky vocals. Easy, mystifying and groove worthy, Nightswim would be the perfect counterpart for a road trip, house party or candlelit evening. The energetic charm of glittery keys and vocals thrive rhythmically so well, it is enough to call this a stand-out album. Nightswim has all the wiring that makes a soul connection in audio form. The stiffened appeal of the title track is that it sounds futuristic and yet is woefully beautiful. The downtempo beat hearkens back to charismatic ’80s synth pop. The bonus single, “Love Run Dry,” operates within that same synth glory. The dreamy haze of “Jewels & Sapphires” is decorated in sweeping echoes of intergalactic shimmers of luscious keys and furtive echoes of drums. Yet each single on the album operates in its own unique space. It is so easy to fall in love with Nightswim because of the romanticism felt in Brooke Addamo’s vocals and words along with the charged-up textures of rich rhythms and melodies, which are unforgettable and captivating.
