the cultOpening with a bigger than big sounding “Wild Flower” lead singer Ian Astbury and the boys of The Cult rolled through the complete Electric album as the first set of their night at Roseland. Billy Duffy played with a perfect electric lead guitar economy, he and Astbury the songwriters and original members of this band, while Ian in his sunglasses and jacket danced, shouted, sung and beat the hell out of his tambourine. As expected “Love Removal Machine” mid set whipped the crowd around me into a frenzy, but overall the band handled the full album, in its running order, masterly.

The band returned after their intermission to hit nuggets from Choice of Weapon and other album’s high points, Astbury having fun mocking the cell phone video takers. “”Honey from a Knife” rocked as did two R songs…”Rain” and “Rise.” Of course they closed the regular set with my favorite “She Sells Sanctuary” and though I would have liked a few more songs from Love, I was pretty well wrung out at the end of this last tune that when the band hit the stage for encores I didn’t know if any of us had anymore in us. Of course we did as Ian whipped the crowd into a frenzy over “Spiritwalker” and the last song of the night “Sun King.”

Let’s face it, bands as rockin’ as The Cult are hard to find. Many pretend to occupy this throne, but very few pull it off, young or old. The Cult however is the real deal.
