Listening Party/Record Release For John Lodge’s 10,000 Light Yeas Ago @ Joe’s Pub 4/14/2015

John Lodge albumAs a member of the seminal prog rock group The Moody Blues for some 5 decades (the band is even now touring) bassist, songwriter and vocalist John Lodge courts a legendary status. The grey-haired genial Brit had a record release party at Joe’s Pub this past Tuesday that proved to be a great night.

First of all, Joe’s Pub is a stellar place to attend a concert or a small intimate Q&A/listening party, which this was. Lodge’s new album 10,000 Light Years Ago (his first solo album in 38 years!) is a lush 8-song achievement. It features some signature Moody Blue-isms (as well as Lodge bringing back two old Moody’s to play on the stand-out tune “Simply Magic” a song about his grandson) as well as country-influenced numbers, wrenching love ballads and some fiddle-stomping fun. All around this is a collection of songs that Lodge assured us are about his life, but not so much a looking backward as looking into the future.

As we all sat and enjoyed the album played in its entirety it was fun to watch Lodge react to the tunes, smiling and playing mock air-guitar or singing softly to himself with the slower songs-especially the heart-wrenching “Lose Your Love.” Afterwards we were treated to great stories from the man-one about Lodge just recently having to wrap his bass in a carpet to shuttle it to a one-off gig he was performing at since the instrument wouldn’t fit in his car in its case, or regaling us all about the time he got to see Buddy Holly back in his childhood town of Birmingham-and he seemed as thrilled by the warmth (and questions) from his fans as by the video hello’s those two ex Moody’s (Mike Pinter and Ray Thomas ) sent.

It really was so endearing to see this man who has been at the music business so long, part of one of the most important rock bands of all time, simply humbled by the love his fans showed him this night at Joe’s Pub.
