On Wednesday, May 11, 20+ New York City restaurants and bakeries came together featuring their best dishes. Brunch Eats, presented by The Village Voice, was hosted on the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum’s beautiful and spacious flight deck. To the soundtrack of The Brooklyn Sugar Stompers, I toured delicious eateries determined to eat as much as my stomach could handle. My game plan was to start with the savory dishes before finishing off with the sweet.

Breads Bakery offered up my first tasty treat: spinach and feta bureka. A savory pastry filed with a delicious mix of warm feta and spinach. Up next was Mr. Purple’s corn beef hash followed by Eugene & Co.’s black sea bass and scallop “bloody mary” ceviche. Both dishes offered a blast of flavor and spices to please the pallet.

I’m not vegan, but I couldn’t resist trying breakfast sliders by Champs Diner: tofu scramble, soysage and vegan hollandaise. The final word—unequivocally delicious. Ess-a-Bagel served up a multitude of cream cheese options including chocolate chip, jalapeno, and apple or cinnamon cream cheese. My choice of jalapeno had just the right amount of kick to blend perfectly with the bagel base.

Underwest Donuts’ blueberry thyme and carwash (vanilla-lavender) donuts were a yummy start to my dessert rotation. This didn’t mean, of course, that I couldn’t sample Dough Doughnuts’ assortment of extra mini doughnuts. Their fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth dough was the winner of the night. Mixed with their sweet and sticky frosting, it wasn’t possible to stop at sampling just one. From their salted chocolate caramel to hibiscus flavors, I was in heaven from the first bite.

When the seemingly endless line for Bustan finally cleared, I finished my dessert excursion with their Bustan French toast: homemade challah bread, crème anglaise pate, crème fraiche, mixed berries, silan and tahini sauce.

It was an excellent end to my Brunch Eats night. Trust me, if the next Village Voice event is like this one, make sure you go. You won’t want to miss out.
