Laurel Canyon is a new feature-length docuseries that will be shown on the EPIX premium television network, premiering May 31st at 9 PM ET/PT and concluding the following Sunday, June 7th at 9 PM ET/PT. The ‘place,’ Laurel Canyon is a twisting part of the Hollywood Hills where too many rockstars enjoyed care-free small-house living, creating what would be considered the L.A. sound in the mid to late 60’s and mid-’70s.

This 2-part series, directed by Alison Ellwood (she gave us the magnificent History of the Eagles), pulls together lots of stuff to make this series sparkle. There’s rare unseen footage, plus voice-over and on-camera interviews with the people who made the see-and-be-scene at the time; Jackson Browne, Don Henley, Michelle Phillips, Linda Ronstadt, and many more are featured here.

Part 1 focuses on earlier years when artists like The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Mamas & The Papas, and of course, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young were living in the canyon and creating classic songs. In part 2 of the movie, we open on the darker times of 1969, the soon implosion of CSNY and a decidedly ‘second wave’ of artists emerging. These music stars, Linda Ronstadt and The Eagles, heading the bunch, was amassing fortune and fame nobody of the Laurel Canyon set could imagine. Gone were the days of playing in folk clubs on the sunset strip and sitting around someone’s living room and noodling your latest song to the collected party.

Indeed, about time and scene we shan’t see again, Laurel Canyon is a great way to delve deeply into the rumors you may have heard and dream of a life only a very few ever touched.
