THE SEX FILES: Part Time Prostitute The Secret Confessions of a New Zealand Hooker

My opinion has been, for quite some time now, that you are bound to see more amazing theatre off-Broadway- sometimes very off-than you’ll ever catch on Broadway.

It will certainly cost you a lot less.

But throw in some sex, something true, fun and positive…I am there for sure. In fact, there is so very little sex stuff happening in a theatre setting, so when I see a show with a naughty/intriguing title like Part Time Prostitute The Secret Confessions of a New Zealand Hooker, you just know I am going to be there.

I had the occasion to visit the ultra cool Red Room for the American Premier of Part Time Prostitute The Secret Confessions of a New Zealand Hooker. This one-woman hour and fifteen is written, directed and acted by Lucy Johnson who is Rachel Rouge, a mid-30’s lady who has traveled the world, seen many adventures and worked as a burlesque performer, high-end IT worker and for the purposes of this show prostitute in Wellington, New Zealand.

On a very basic set-basically a couch/bed, and a couple of tables and a slide screen behind her-the audience is treated to an “intimate and humorous peek at the ins and outs of a profession that is sometimes glamorized, often vilified, but always deeply intriguing.” Decriminalized as the oldest profession in New Zealand (and I learned the difference this night between legalized and decriminalized) Rachel’s experience working as a working girl makes for a compelling round of stories and her observations make for a fantastic night.

And once again, off off Broadway.

I’m not sure if it was the fact that Lucy was so positive in her role or that she is quite the compelling story teller, as well as just adorable with her big bright eyes, cute accent (though of course it is only an accent to me being as I am not from New Zealand), her strutting good-natured sexuality and ample bod (and yes I know I am objectifying  her femininity, but then again I’m sure this particular lady wouldn’t care if I was in the slightest) which had me simply riveted the entire time. It was the combination of all of this that made this play work. With just one person on stage speaking with a minimum number of props, Red Room was the perfect place to see the American Premier of Part Time Prostitute The Secret Confessions of a New Zealand Hooker, which was also one of the best experiences I have had in a  theatre in a very long time.

You basically have two more times to catch this show, the 27th and 28th of this month. I urge you to do so. Call Smart Tix  212-868-444 or check out www.horsetrade.info.
