THE INTERVIEW: Designer James Piatt
It isn’t often that American design captures my attention as it tends to be “safe.” Not long ago, I came across a metal bag which sent me on a path that ultimately led me to the notorious handbags of James Piatt. His work is primarily in industrial and product design, which has garnered him several awards. We caught up with the designer in California and asked a few questions.
Qualities you most admire in design: Designers who are willing to do what is considered the wrong thing; to do something different.
Qualities you least admire in design: Designers who lie and phony designer banter.
Dream project: Designing a new space craft or sports car
Favorite virtue: Doing things to help the environment and other people.
Favorite vice: Dangerous girls.
Favorite fashion era: The sixties.
What is your favorite destination? Paris.
If you could come back as an object, what would it be? A hammer.
If you could have someone else’s house, whose would it be? Rudolf Schindler’s old home in Hollywood.
Who are your fantasy lunch guests? Milla Jovovich, Captain Beefheart, and Master Shake.
Favorite place to have a drink? The Green Mill in Chicago.
Whose diary would you like to read? Mary Magdalene
What current trend would you like to see disappear? The f*cking cardigan sweater for guys.
Favorite trend of all time? Hot pants
Which talent would you most like to possess? Dancing
