Beaner Bar
447 Graham Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11211-1413

There’s all this buzz lately about Graham Ave. becoming the New Bedford and considering I just moved away from Bedford to escape the new bridge-and-tunnel scene, I sincerely hope Graham goes unscathed.

The neighborhood around Graham Ave. has always really interested me with it’s great blend of older Italians with their awesome shops dedicated to Just Pasta or Just Meat, as well as young hipsters looking for a more affordable and quiet place to make their home. It’s a cool blend, with some seriously tasty eats and bars that have good specials, good jukes and are generally half full (I’m an optimist). The best attribute to the Graham Ave. hood, hands down, is the continued opportunity for small business to thrive.

My mom is a small business lady, so I’ve always preferred locally-operated type shops. Every morning- even on weekends- I get my iced coffee from a Rockabilly chick named Karen who’s managed a sweet coffee shop on Graham for almost two years.

Beaner Bar, a direct trade, organic and eco-friendly café owned by four Mexicans with a passion for really good beans, is outfitted with Day-of-the-Dead Mexican trinkets and the magazine rack is stacked with fliers from local businesses and Henry Rollins books. Shifts are divided amongst several locals (oddly, Karen seems to find the most adorable baristas) and you’ll know everyone on the block in about two weeks.

Beaner specializes in coffee ground from South American and African beans, bestows them with great names and perfects every brew. As a special treat on weekends you can get fresh and delicious meat or veggie tamales.

A 16oz iced coffee with set you back $2.50, with specialty brews, lattes and all your coffeehouse favorites ranging from $3-$5. And if you’re a regular like me, they’ll keep a rewards card on file for you at the bar, which earns me a free one every two weeks. ¡Arriba!
