Having purposefully migrated from Manhattan to Brooklyn two years ago to enjoy a sense of community and a better selection of dive bars, I have to admit I am reluctant to cross the bridge on the weekends to hit the grid. However, there are still a few haunts that draw me out, and those are undoubtedly the mainstay bars and restaurants of city subculture.

A classic going out in the ‘Hattan routine for me starts off with a big and delicious meal with friendly restaurateurs, heavy on the house wine—this creates an excellent base in the tummy and fuel to propel you to the final finish (closing out Black and White, Max Fish or Mars Bar at 6am).

While I’ve always had my own abridged list for fine Friday night dining, this particular week, a friend turned me on to one I seemed to have always overlooked—Parigot French Bistro on Grand (Soho, NYC).

Since it was a bit of a celebratory occasion, my date’s birthday, we kicked things off at our corner booth in style with a glass of fine French bubbly. The menu has an excellent and affordable wine list however, and the friendly French American staff will pick out a perfect match for your meal.

If a restaurant names a dish after itself, I am apt to try it- and I’m happy to say that the Mussels Parigot do the establishment its justice: A large portion, perfect to share, in a delicate, white wine and cream sauce with a touch of garlic and spice. The portions of our Red Snapper in Tamarind sauce special and Steak Tartare were a little hefty in my experience with French cuisine, however if you come hungry, you will leave satisfied. While Chef Michele is generous, he is also precise in his preparations—both the fish and meat done right, savory and delicious.

Several glasses of Cote du Rhone and Pinot Noir later, having chosen our restaurant kick-start quite wisely, we were warmly floating our way East to make some bad decisions.

Entrees average at about $20-$25 with very affordable and delicious fish options. Parigot also offers an $18 prix fixe menu which includes an appetizer and entrée ($21 with a glass of house wine).
