Theater: SEXTACULAR! SEXTACULAR!
Show time: 10:30 PM
Venue: Bleecker Street Theater
Food: Babbo
Drink: The Dove

Joey Nova Presents brings you SEXTACULAR! SEXTACULAR!, a re-imagining of the cabaret shows from turn-of-the-century France, but with a modern New York City rock n roll edge. One of the six Italian eateries of celebrity chef Mario Battali, Babbo takes Italian American cooking to another level. While the food can be expensive and reservations would be the best way to get a table, this place is highly regarded among food connoisseurs is is nothing short of amazing. Disguised as a lounge The Dove is really a neighborhood bar dressed up in red, white, and gold décor with a nice selection of beers on tap and a very good mixed drink menu featuring delicious martini’s. One of my favorite coffee houses, Café Reggio has the most literate and West Village atmosphere I have been to. A real slice of New York, it was also in the movie Superfly. Go there or be square!

Friday April 2

Location: Union Square, NYC
Bands: Manchester Orchestra Get Tickets Here
Show time: 7:30 PM
Venue: The Fillmore at Irving Plaza
Food: Momofuku
Drink: The Village Pourhouse
Miscellaneous: Sundaes and Cones

Atlanta’s Manchester Orchestra make indie rock that sounds live when it’s on vinyl and even better in person. Joining them is Biffy Clyro. If you like ramen noodles and pork, then Momofuku is your spot for food. The Berkshire pork is the best I’ve had and it’s the only place I’ll eat pork period, which should tell you just how good Momofuku really is! The Village Pourhouse looks like a neighborhood bar to watch sports but is actually has three more rooms, where you can order food or find a quiet place to smooch! For dessert a little left of the dial, Sundaes and Cones offers eclectic flavors like wasabi and corn and many more flavors that are familiar.

Saturday April 3

Location: Union Square, NYC
Event: NYC Pillow Fight
Show time: 3 PM; FREE
Venue: Union Square
Food: Yama
Drink: 119 Bar
Miscellaneous: Barnes & Noble (Union Square location)

Get your pillows out and prepare to join thousands of fellow New Yorkers for the fifth annual NYC Pillow Fight at Union Square. This FREE pillow fight will be timed to coincide with pillow fights happening in cities around the world. One of the best Japanese restaurants in the city, Yama, serves up some of the hugest and freshest portions of sushi, while not being as expensive as you think. Close to Irving Plaza, 119 Bar is one dive where you can get cheap drinks, play pool, and hang with friends while not standing out or being bothered when you’re a sweaty mess from dancing after seeing Shadow and Chemist perform, and I mean that in a good way! If you’re bored and early for the show, head over to the four floor Barnes & Noble to look through magazines and get a cup of coffee.

Saturday April 3

Location: Gowanus, Brooklyn
Bands: William Brittelle’s Television Landscape + Sarah Kirkland Snider’s Penelope
Show time: 8 PM
Venue: Bell House
Food: El Viejo Yayo
Drink: Buttermilk Bar
Miscellaneous: The Chocolate Room

NYC indie-classical label New Amsterdam Records presents William Brittelle’s Television Landscape, an apocalyptic-yet-hopeful mixed-genre concept album from composer/performer William Brittelle and will feature Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond), Signal, members of Alarm Will Sound, NOW Ensemble, So Percussion, Long Count and more. Also being performed is Sarah Kirkland Snider’s Penelope, a haunting 60-minute song cycle for female voice, chamber orchestra, and electronics composed by Sarah Kirkland Snider, featuring vocalist Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond and highly acclaimed chamber orchestra Signal, conducted by Brad Lubman, and sound design by Michael Hammond. Keeping the night going, try El Viejo Yayo for dinner. This gorgeous and warm restaurant has an elegant dining room and an affordable menu offering Dominican/Latin cuisine. The outside of Buttermilk Bar may look non-descript, but looks are deceiving . . . just not in this case, as this low-key watering hole is where you can grab a cheap drink in a friendly atmosphere, while playing a board game or two. With a near insane menu of chocolates from coffee and tea to delectable dessert, and even beer, The The Chocolate Room is a great way to end the night on a high note.

Sunday April 4

Location: Midtown East, NYC
Art: Graphic Heroes, Magic Monsters
Show time: See website for schedule; Through June 13
Venue: Japan Society
Food: Peking Duck House
Drink: Blackstones Pub & Restaurant
Miscellaneous: New York Milkshake Company

In the exhibition Graphic Heroes, Magic Monsters, the work of Utagawa Kuniyoshi showing scenes of history and legend from 150 years ago are featured here along with more than 130 depictions of spiders, skeletons, women warriors, ghosts and samurai in combat. At one of my favorite places to get duck, The Peking Duck House, the meat is succulent and the skin crunches like a potato chip. Sometimes you just want to grab a pint without paying a cover charge or playing host to a group of people after work, which is why I like Blackstones Pub & Restaurant. It looks like an old-time saloon and has two pool tables in the back and plenty of other games, while also being big enough to grab traditional American food from the menu. If you’re still hungry, check out the New York Milkshake Company for one of the best $6 shakes of your life.
