There has been a lot of buzz about Dum Dum Girls. So much so that I was really excited to get a copy of their debut, I Will Be. If I’m being totally honest I was a bit disappointed. Dum Dum Girls, who in the case of this recording are just one girl, are reasonably enjoyable but don’t stand out in any way. Every song has the same instrumentation, the same claustrophobic production, and very few songs have hooks that distinguish themselves. The addition of another voice (Brandon Welchez of Crocodiles) on “Blank Girl” makes a huge difference because it brings a different color to this monochrome palette. The other best song is actually a cover of Sonny and Cher’s “Baby Don’t Go.” While all the originals sound detached, this song has some genuine emotion in it that listeners are sure to respond to. This is the one that closes the album and its airiness is a big relief after the rest of the album. Otherwise, I Will Be sounds like guitars and drum machines fighting each other in a cage of reverb. I don’t hate this album but I was hoping for a lot more.
