So you want me to hip you to the best album you’ll hear all summer, possibly all year? Bobby Bare, Jr.’s A Storm A Tree My Mother’s Head is a twelve-song beauty of an album by a singer/songwriter you probably have never heard of (and that’s a freakin’ shame). Bare’s got a pedigree with country music that can’t be denied (his dad is the famous Bobby Bare).  This album, like his others, is excellent.

The album begins with “Your Goat Is on Fire,” a semi-country tune with solid harmonies, noisy guitar and Bare’s honest-to-goodness-voice. But just as you think you’re in for a modern rock-country record, it starts sounding progressive on “Swollen But Not the Same,” with its great organ section and weird ending. As he often does, Bare offers simple vocals and acoustic guitar on the lament “One of Us Has Got to Go.”

As well as being a great story, the title track also features some fine pedal steel from Carl Broemel.  And while the pop-sounding “Rock and Roll Halloween” is populated with vivid, interesting characters, “The Sky is the Ground” features a cool, single-note strut. “But I Do” ends the proceedings, written by both Bare Sr. and Jr., and proves to be the best song on the album.
