Old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll along the lines of the 1970s greats is hard to come by these days. Fortunately, for fans of such music, Sweden’s Oholics are able to reach back into the catchiest elements of that area while adding modern twists from the same vein as The Strokes, Oasis, and Razorlight to create a great sound. Not one to fall into conventions, Oholics manage to make their sound uniquely their own by integrating a sitar into their mix. A lesser band would sound like they were just trying to mimic the Beatles, but the Swedish six-piece pulls it off uniquely and effortlessly.

Disgraceland is an energetic record that deserves to spread throughout the US and beyond, as it seems to exist in its own time when simply the best elements of rock are allowed to mingle and conspire into great tracks. Despite the negative associations that can be made with a title like “Columbine,” the driving force of the drums and cymbals makes the song impossibly infectious. “Lucy Leave,” a Pink Floyd cover from the band’s early Syd Barrett days, does the band’s name justice, and “Wake Up” is a warm, distorted jam session of electric guitar and melodic sitar.

If there’s any justice, Oholics will blow up internationally soon, as people get back to the basics and give this group a shot at superstardom in the same way it was done in previous eras.
