Mogwai fans may know the band as producing some of the softest, melodic sounds of any band in recent years. Albums like Young Team and Mr. Beast have solidified the band for many as the go-to ensemble for instrumental rock with powerful sentiment. Mogwai’s latest release, Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, continues the band’s established sound, as well as develops it further.
“White Noise” is a lulling track filled with repeating rhythms and humming guitars. The track induces a calmness and serenity over the listener. I found myself less stressed and a bit happier after listening to the track. “Letters to the Metro” is even quieter than “White Noise.” With a slow introduction and more of an airy sound, the track is vibrant and emotional. “Too Raging to Cheers” falls in line with these two tracks, providing the perfect trio of tracks for a stressful day.
“Death Rays” is a bit more powerful and harmonic when compared with other tracks on the album. The song becomes a bit grating around the 1:30 mark and moves along aggressively towards the listener. “Mexican Grand Prix” also follows this line of attack on the listener with a more electronic leaning and happy sentiment than many of the other album tracks. Light lyrics push the track into the heads of listeners as an earworm – a track that you won’t be able to get out of your head for days.
Overall, Mogwai’s Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will is an album that you will not want to miss.
