I don’t know where to start with the Foo Fighters. I have considered them a religion for many years. At this moment they are known as the band that performed two sold-out nights at Wembley Stadium and went on to record a record in a garage. A few weeks ago I had the luxury of seeing the FF’s new documentary and live concert of the new album in theaters. Wasting Light is the same and different in many ways. Butch Vig, who produced Nevermind by Nirvana, produced this album. It is important to mention that the album was recorded on analog tapes, not computers. Because of this, the sound is different from almost every record today.

At first listen, I thought Wasting Light did not compare to a number of great Foo Fighters albums. After many listens though, the Foo Fighters’ sound came out. There is something distinctive in every band and it should show in each of their albums.

“Bridge Burning” is the first song on the album, and one of my favorites. However, it does not hold the classic FF sound. If you do want to hear Dave Grohl scream, this is one of your few chances on the record. “These Days” is a classic FF melody, as it starts off slow and gradually moves into the hard-hitting rock song it should be. A must-hear is “I Should Have Known.” Krist Novoselic plays bass on this song, bringing a haunting matrimony of Grohl, Novoselic and Vig. The three had not been in the same room since Nevermind before recording this song. His bass licks are easy to hear and add a haunting depth to a song that is alluded to being about the Nirvana days.

In the end, this is a must-have. It has been advertised shamelessly and rightfully so. Look for the hidden meanings, enjoy the sounds and add it to your collection.
