Bento Burger: An American Classic, Bento-ver Backwards

If you’ve never had a neon dining experience, let me describe it to you here. It’s comprised of one part neon-yellow spiked lemonade, one blindingly-bright owner, and an atomic explosion of flavors that results when two cultures collide.

After diving indoors to escape the heat on the streets, we were warmly greeted by bartender and host, and opted for bar seating to be closer to the ice-cold libations. Owner Hayne Suthon was on hand, sipping lemonade, regaling guests with stories and fielding some questions from the occasional drag performers that overflow from neighbor venue Lucky Chengs, which Suthon also owns.

But let’s get to the food. The appetizer platter ($16) is not your typical combination of day-old, deep fried, Asian treats, but rather a lovingly-arranged display of fresh BBQ ribs, delicious summer rolls, mighty tasty chicken wings and lightly-breaded calamari. Burgers come in your choice of Beef ($10), Sirloin($16), Kobe($19) or Japanese Hanbuugu($11) with a wide array of buns, cheeses, sauces and extras to customize the perfect mouthful of an American classic with Asian fixins. Oh, and there are also neon signs, menus, flags and chandeliers—calling folks off the avenues, and possibly from space– So, you can’t, and you shouldn’t miss it.
