What, at first, felt like something I had seen before turned out to be more than your average musical, comedy, about a group of women exposing their insecurities in Mother Eve’s Secret Garden of Sensual Sisterhood. This refreshing, inventive, musical centers around a self help guru, Mother Eve, as she guides a group of women through their trials and tribulations, while teaching them to worship their inner goddesses and unleash their inner skanks. The mediocre beginning led me to think the show was going to be one note and predictable. However, as the actors grew into their characters the plot quickly became a pleasant surprise.

Each actor’s talent shined as they put their comedic chops in full effect, maintaining their individual wants, needs, and emotions. As the musical developed the more I started to see how each actor incorporated their own qualities into their characters which was fitting for the roles they were playing. The individual performances stood out in their own right. Every actor showcased a unique characteristic that only they were familiar with, having spent time playing these characters. Alena Acker (Rhododendron) was not afraid to expose her nerdy charm as the frumpy woman who’s learning to stand up to her boyfriend. Uma Inncrocci’s (Snapdragon) performance was hilariously quirky, and awkward. She showed originality in her role as the uptight woman who’s learning to make friends with the women in the group. Danielle Montezino’s (Bird of Paradise) comedic timing as the sexy woman with “Sexual Turrets” was spot on and unexpected. Maitley Weismann’s (Mustard Plant) performance possessed a rebellious sarcasm, and vulnerability as she constantly questioned her authority. Ashley Wren Collins (Mother Eve) presented energy, style, and sass, as she led the audience to believe that there is something more going on than what she presents to the women in her group. She epitomizes everything I imagined a self help guru would be.

Mother Eve’s Secret Garden of Sensual Sisterhood was original, and creative. What the beginning lacked was made up for in the end. With its zany one liners, music only played on an acoustic guitar and a surprise twist towards the end, Mother Eve’s Secret Garden of Sensual Sisterhood was nothing short of a fun night of girl power at the theatre.
